Have you ever wondered where or when the semi-truck came about? Well, the little community here at Carrier Net might have the answer for you.
The trucking industry started around the turn of the 20th century where there where about 700 trucks on the road. By 1924 the number grow to 416,569. Now there are roughly 1.9 million trucks on the road that transport 70% of the goods in the US
The first trucks were built for utility and not comfort. They were built on solid rubber tires and could only travel short distances at very low speeds. With the advance of new technologies, semis are about to drive long distance and can provide a home away from home.
A couple of major advance in the trucking industry was the development of the highway system throughout the US and the logging industry. The highways provide safer, smoother roads for long distance travel. The logging industry was in need for a faster, more efficient way to transport lumber, this need provided the trucking industry with an opportunity to expand its services throughout the country.
Hopefully this brief history helped with understanding an industry that truly connects the US coast to coast. For more information head on over here.
